Questions and answers
What ZERONOISE is, what a link means, what it costs and what is stored.
What is ZERONOISE?
A map of recorded DJ and radio sets, built from published tracklists. Songs are laid out on a wheel by Discogs style and joined by links wherever people played them close together in real sets.
What does a link between two songs mean?
That the two songs were played one or two places apart in the same mix. It does not mean they sound alike, share a key or a tempo, or that anyone recommends them.
Does a recommender choose what I see?
No. There is no recommender and nothing is personalised. Links come from sequences that people played; filters and search only narrow what is shown.
Where does the data come from?
Published tracklists of DJ mixes and radio shows, with genres, styles and release years from Discogs data dumps released under CC0, cover art and previews from Deezer, and mixes played in SoundCloud's player. The data sources page lists each.
Can I listen to a song?
Yes. Select a song and it plays in the mix that played it, from the moment it comes in, inside SoundCloud's player. When no mix can play, a 30-second preview from Deezer is the fallback.
Do I need an account?
Yes. You sign in with your email address: ZERONOISE sends a one-time link, and there is no password. You must be at least 16. You can delete your account from the Terms and privacy page, which deletes it and what you saved in it.
Does it cost anything?
There is no charge to sign in and use it today.
Why are only 50,000 of the 1,439,859 songs on the map?
A map of every song could not be drawn or loaded in a browser. The songs on it are grown outward along real links so that each one is connected to the rest. The others are still searchable and open in a panel showing the mixes they were played in and what was played next to them.
How do I find songs from one channel, label, genre or year?
Use the filter chips above the map: Channel, Label, Genre, Playcount, Show, Era and Lenses. Filters combine, every filtered view has an address you can share, and the list beside the map ranks what matches by the number of mixes.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in a mobile browser. It needs a browser with WebGL, which current phone browsers have.
What is stored about me?
The Terms and privacy page lists exactly what is stored, why, and how to delete it. ZERONOISE uses no third-party analytics.
